Who is ignis?
Ignis is your code-savvy flame, a spicy fire protection engineer in digital form. Created by Duval Fire Codes, I help you cut through the smoke of confusing regulations and decode fire and life safety challenges with clarity and confidence. While I do not replace the professional engineer nor the approval of the AHJ, I can help point you in the right direction!
I am still under works (life long learner!), but here to help. Read the disclaimer before you start chatting with me.
Why?
As the world advances faster than codes and standards can keep up, striving for compliance and understanding the concepts is KEY in building fire safety. With codes increasing in size, many concepts are hidden behind paywall information, so in an attempt to help educate and in turn reduce the cost of an overly expensive world, Ignis was created.
Ignis Use Disclaimer:
Ignis is an AI-powered fire protection engineering assistant designed to support education, preliminary code interpretation, and informed discussion of fire and building safety concepts. While Ignis draws upon model codes such as the IBC, IFC, and the latest NFPA standards, along with authoritative texts and best practices, the guidance provided is not a substitute for professional engineering judgment, site-specific design, or official determinations by the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ).
All fire protection decisions—especially those impacting life safety, code compliance, or construction—must be reviewed and approved by qualified professionals and relevant authorities. Ignis does not provide legally binding interpretations, design certifications, or final compliance decisions.
While Ignis will strive to provide fire-tight guidance, it is not a substitute for a licensed FPE or your AHJ. Think of Ignis as your first line of insight and not the final stamp of approval. Always verify with your jurisdiction and a qualified engineer or architect before implementing life safety decisions.
By using Ignis, you acknowledge that the insights offered are advisory in nature and that the ultimate responsibility for code compliance and fire safety rests with licensed professionals and the applicable AHJ.
The "Don’t Get Expelled on My Watch":
Ignis is an AI assistant designed to help interpret fire code with curiosity and care. He is not an instructor, a certified plan reviewer, or a shortcut to passing your Fire Protection Engineering 201 final. Submitting Ignis's responses as academic work without citation violates academic integrity policies.
And also, Ignis will know, and he will judge you.
Because when it comes to fire safety, even the hottest advice should be reviewed before it’s stamped.
Your Fire Code Companion
Ignis is a code-savvy digital assistant built to support architects, engineers, contractors, and code officials in navigating the complexities of fire and life safety. Whether you're designing a new building, reviewing a sprinkler layout, or puzzling through an egress scenario, Ignis helps you make sense of the codes that keep buildings—and people—safe.
What Ignis Can Do:
Code Clarity On-Demand:
From NFPA 13 to IBC Chapter 10, get quick, expert-level guidance on model codes (default: 2024 editions).
Scenario Triage:
Present your design puzzle or code conundrum—I’ll help dissect, assess, and identify key compliance paths.
Life Safety Deep Dives:
Need to demystify a tough egress layout? Fire wall vs. fire barrier? I’ve got comparisons and clarifications ready.
Sprinkler and Smoke Systems:
Guidance on layout strategy, hydraulic implications, smoke control calculations, and detection coverage.
Mentorship Mode:
For students, interns, and those new to fire protection—ask anything. I’ll explain with real-world relevance and code citations.
Limitations:
Ignis offers guidance based on model codes and best practices, but always defers to your local Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) for final interpretation. It does not replace the role of a licensed fire protection engineer. ALWAYS VERIFY REQUIREMENTS WITH YOUR LOCALLY ADOPTED CODES. I won't do your homework for you, that is for you to complete, I can assist, but I will know if you use my responses for academic work without citation and judge you.
